Governing Complexity: The European "Third Way" to Artificial Intelligence and the New Role of the System Integrator

Oct 2026

Faced with the challenges of global markets, Europe is outlining a sovereign, ethical, and sustainable AI ecosystem. Innovaway's role as a System Integrator evolves into an orchestrator of complex ecosystems, uniting clinical excellence, industrial research, and capital to transform technology into tangible value. Cristiana Papiri, Digital Innovation Director at Innovaway, shared her thoughts on these topics in a recent video interview following the panel “AI for Europe’s Competitiveness” during the Digital Innovation Forum 2026 in Cernobbio.

The Macro-Scenario: The Need for Vertical and Sovereign AI

The European "Third Way": Ethics, Sovereignty, and Sustainability The current global technological landscape requires corporate decision-makers to engage in deep strategic reflection. On one hand, the financial unsustainability of the overseas Big Tech model is emerging; on the other, the strong competitive pressure of low-cost, open-source solutions originating from Asia. For Europe, the only viable alternative is building a "Third Way": a technological ecosystem founded on an Artificial Intelligence that is intrinsically ethical, secure, and, above all, sovereign. Our continent's true competitive strength lies in building Industrial, Clinical, and Supply Chain AI. We are talking about vertical, highly specialized, transparent Artificial Intelligence designed to be inherently respectful of fundamental rights and environmental sustainability. In this scenario, the integration between digital innovation and ecological transition ceases to be a slogan and becomes the engine of competitiveness.

From Suppliers to Orchestrators: The Evolution of the System Integrator

To manage this complexity, the role of a System Integrator like Innovaway has transformed deeply. We no longer act as simple suppliers or installers of technology, but operate as orchestrators of complex ecosystems, serving as a Single Point of Contact for the entire lifecycle of innovation.

Concretely, we bring technological potential down to earth by moving along three strategic axes:

  • Bridge Between Research and Market: We connect heterogeneous worlds—centers of scientific excellence (such as the University of Naples Federico II or the IRCCS Istituto Pascale), Public Administration, infrastructure providers, and SMEs. Our task is to translate academic research excellence into industrial software products and certified, market-ready medical devices.
  • Guarantee of Sovereignty and Compliance "by Design": We make complex architectures operational in full compliance with European directives (AI Act, GDPR, MDR/IVDR). By leveraging Cloud-Agnostic architectures on European data centers, Edge nodes, and Federated Learningframeworks, we allow algorithms to train directly at the source (in the factory or hospital), ensuring that sensitive data never leaves the owner's security perimeter.
  • Leverage Effect Between Public and Private Capital: We tap into major national and European programs (PNRR, MIMIT Development Contracts, IPCEI) to reduce the initial risk of frontier R&D. Subsequently, we invest private resources to accelerate First Industrial Deploymentconverting funding into lasting economic value, qualified employment, and scalable infrastructure.

Bringing Innovation down to Earth: From MIRABILE to F-SNICAP

Innovaway's commitment to supporting this transition takes concrete shape in two initiatives that demonstrate how our solutions can meet the needs of particularly complex and strategic sectors: Manufacturing 4.0 and Predictive Healthcare.

MIRABILE: The Twin Transition in Automotive. A nominee for the Digital Innovation Forum 2026 Awardsthe MIRABILE project represents the concrete application of the Twin Transition. Working with lead partner SAPA and MIMIT, we implemented an advanced Digital Manufacturing Platform a closed-loop Digital Twin supported by AI agents utilizing ReAct logic for green logistics optimization. By executing Large Language Models, we ensure zero production waste and reduced emissions, while safeguarding the confidentiality of industrial data.

F-SNICAP (IPCEI Tech4CURE): AI for Oncological Healthcare. The same data governance, security, and efficiency methodologies developed for industry become the engine to innovate the clinical domain, where data protection is vital. Innovaway is one of four premier Italian companies leading an initiative of strategic importance: the European IPCEI Tech4Cure program. The program addresses the need to build a European AI market by investing in the development of sovereign, ethical, and secure AI-based infrastructures. Tech4Cure aims to accelerate the transition toward a proactive, sustainable, patient-centered care model, promoting the concept of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine ("3P" medicine). Within this framework, we launched the F-SNICAP project, which—through the development of a modular suite of Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) components—aims to transform oncological diagnostics and bridge the gap between academic research and daily clinical practice, in full compliance with the most stringent regulatory standards for reliability and safety. A complex challenge that Innovaway leads from both a technological and management standpoint, in collaboration with indisputable authorities in the medical-scientific and academic fields.

Joining Forces for a Sovereign "AI Continent"

The integration of these domains demonstrates the scalability and robustness of our model. However, to truly propel this ecosystem, systemic gatherings like the Digital Innovation Forum in Cernobbio are essential.

These events are not mere showcases, but catalysts that encourage discussion, skill-sharing, and the establishment of strategic relationships—three vital functions for corporate decision-makers. In particular, they facilitate:

  1. Strategic Alignment: Bringing industrial policy, finance, and ICT players together around common goals.
  2. Reduction of Information Asymmetry: Demonstrating to markets that ethical and strictly regulated AI is not a paralyzing constraint, but a mark of trust (Trustmark) that increases the commercial value and reliability of products.
  3. Capital Value Maximization: Tangibly proving that it is possible to lead technological platforms capable of competing globally, laying the groundwork for a truly European, sovereign, and sustainable "AI Continent."

In this constantly evolving scenario, Innovaway supports corporate decision-makers in navigating technological, regulatory, and infrastructural complexity, identifying concrete solutions to improve operational efficiency and bolster competitiveness.
